Dystopian Fiction is a branch of fictional stories usually involving a bleak future involving a society where everything you could imagine has gone wrong.

 

A utopia is an imaginary perfect society where society has reached a point where everything is fair and everyone is content.  

 

A dystopia or dystopian society is the complete opposite, where everyone lives in a state of misery and their lives are controlled by a government or dictator.  Sometimes a society that appears like a utopia is actually a dystopia for most of the people of the society.
